What is a lien sale car?
A lien sale vehicle is a vehicle that was towed either by a law enforcement agency or private property owner, and the registered/legal owner failed to pay for the towing and/or storage. Or an abandoned vehicle left on someone's property or maybe left at a garage/shop and never picked up.
How do I register the vehicle?
At the end of the lien sale the buyer will receive all the lien papers which will enable him/her to register the vehicle. Be aware there may be back fees and penalties and DMV will collect them upon transfer, do your research. Smog fees if any, are also the responsibility of the buyer. Lienholder's will almost never warranty or be responsible for the condition of a lien sale vehicle. All lien sale vehicles are sold AS IS - WHERE IS.
Do the vehicles run and drive?
The majority of these vehicles were running and driven when they were picked up, however, after sitting 30-90 days, sometimes they are hard to get going again.
Do they disclose mechanical problems?
Generally No. Lienholder's cannot do anything to them until lien sale day. They have been stored only, so they really don't know any more about them than you do.
Why do you have to remove the license plates prior to the sale?
Starting January 1, 2000, the lienholder is required by law to remove the plates on sale day.
